What inspires you? So many different things (and people) inspire me daily. One of the highest compliments I feel is to be told, “You inspired me…”. When Joey and I built our current home I was totally inspired with so many ideas for almost every room; however, when it came to our guest room… I had no inspiration.
The before photos:
For over 2 years I would go into that room and look around frustrated by my lack of inspiration to make it the awesome space I knew it could be. My dilemma was my grandparents furniture. This furniture was entrusted to me when my grandparents passed away. It was their matrimonial bedroom suite and they had it their entire marriage- a full size bed, a dresser with mirror, a nightstand, a chest of drawers & a wall mirror. These pieces of wood and glass mean the world to me but they didn’t fit my style. Not only that, the full size bed just wasn’t cutting it for guests. I toyed with the idea of storing the furniture but I just didn’t want to do that.
Finally I realized I could totally make these antiques work in this room and with my style!! I found a skilled wood-worker who could make the needed changes to convert the bed to queen size while maintaining the original look and detail. Next, I needed someone skilled with paint to re-finish it to a color more in-line with my style. Scott Moss, owner of Custom Renovations, was able to do both! Scott’s team rebuilt the bed, maintaining all of it’s original look and painted the furniture one of my favorite grays by Sherwin Williams, Ellie Gray.
So from where else did I draw inspiration? Well, of course, you know I am obsessed with vibrant beautiful color and Anthorpologie is a huge source of inspiration for me. As a matter of fact, one of my favorite artists, Starla Michelle Halfmann, was a considerable source which inspired the personality of this room. I first discovered Starla at Anthropologie and while I can’t afford her original works, I do have some of her prints and decor from Anthro. I adore her art & it completely captivates me. I chose fabrics and other decor for this room based on the artful creations by Starla which I own. Most of the bedding and lighting came from Anthropologie.
I love to mix old with new so while many of the finishes in this room are not antiques, I did choose to use old photos of my family to fill the frames & table tops. I love vintage photography, especially of the people I cherish. However, the most significant sources of inspiration for our guest room were my grandfather & grandmother, Walter (Bud) & Virginia Kipp. From their bedroom furniture to decor and most importantly in my heart, they can be seen throughout this room.
Last but not ever least, my husband Joey… He is so supportive of all my crazy ideas and gives me the artistic freedom to adorn our home in color and eclectic designs which give each space a cheerful & unique feel. I said I wanted a ship-lap wall and he made it happen, creating it to perfection with his own hands. Joey is without a doubt the person who inspires me the most in all I do!
This room is now a space that makes me happy! Find your inspiration and fill your home with the look you love. Unapologetically create spaces that reflect your style & personality.
Now for the completed masterpiece….
